Services

Fiona will explain how Flying Smiles works over the telephone or via a digital video call. There will be formal forms to complete about you, your medical, dental and dietary habits. Throughout our appointment, Fiona will answer any queries or concerns. Fiona will risk assess your home, agreeing where treatment will take place, checking where the hand wash sink is situated and getting to know your pet!

Fiona will check your understanding on what you have decided to have done and agree to the price of the treatment.  Once you are happy, we will set a date to do the treatment.

🦷 Initial Assessment

Your initial visit will begin with a comprehensive dental hygiene examination. The dental hygienist will go through your medical, social and dental history, along with an assessment of your oral hygiene care at home. All the information collected will be discussed with you to prepare a personalised treatment plan. Together, we will agree specific tasks or goals that will allow you to achieve optimal oral health.

The removal of the soft (plaque) and hard (tartar) deposits from the teeth, both above and below the gum line is called scaling. We do scaling with hand instruments. If the plaque and tartar is left untreated, it can cause gingivitis and can lead to irreversible periodontitis, which can further lead to tooth loss. The removal of plaque, calculus, and ultimately, bacteria is the best way to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Dental polishing, also known as prophylaxis, is done to remove any stains that teeth gather from food and drink. The purpose of dental polishing is to leave the surfaces of teeth clean so that bacteria are unable to stick to them and you have a better chance of keeping the teeth clean during your regular home care routine.

The purpose of oral health education is to advise you on the significance of good oral care and the importance of seeing a dental professional regularly. We aim to educate our clients about the importance of mechanical removal of oral biofilm via toothbrushing, flossing and use of chemotherapeutic agents. At Flying Smiles we assess and consider clients’ limitations, their risks, susceptibility to disease, their personal and cultural values and preferences before formulating the goals/tasks for daily oral care. We give one-to-one instruction and strongly believe in prevention. If you want a dental health educator for your group or school please contact us.

Oral cancer accounts for up to 4% of all malignant cancers in the UK. Chances of a successful treatment are likely with early detection. Oral cancer is 50% more common in men than in women, but rates of these cancers in Scottish women and young people have been increasing in recent years.

It can be found in the lips, tongue, gums, cheeks or lining, or deeper in jaw bones. Regular visits to a dental professional are the best defence against oral cancer as it is difficult to diagnose by the untrained eye. At each appointment, we start off with a soft tissue oral cancer check.

We remove the soft and hard deposits from the denture and give denture care instructions as per denture condition and clients’ requirements. We instruct on proper cleaning and care of your complete or partial denture.

We recommend that you always label dentures and store them in containers partially filled with water. Always remove the denture before going to bed.  Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits will aid the life of your appliance.

Fiona cannot diagnose or give the prognosis (the likely outcome) of diseases such as decaying or broken teeth, or prescribe antibiotics, painkillers or any other drug to alleviate symptoms. If Fiona refers you to a dentist, it is because she feels that it is in the interests of your health or is outside the scope of what she is allowed to do.  In very rare cases, she may not start treatment and may insist a dentist assesses you before she can continue.  This may relate to your medical history and general health, or the condition of your mouth, which gives her concern.  Fiona has set up a procedure to refer you to the local dental clinic of your choice.

The Scottish population consumes too few fruits, vegetables, fish, starchy carbohydrates, and conversely eats too many foods high in fats, sugars and salt. The dietary imbalance increases the risk of developing chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, certain cancers and Type 2 diabetes, as well as tooth decay.

Using the following guidance, (http://www.scottishdental.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/OralHealthAndNutritionGuidance.pdf). Fiona will work with you to see how small changes in your habits can help prevent tooth decay, and improve your overall health.

Periodontal Treatment – £120

Periodontal disease is when there is bone loss around a tooth. This requires special treatment.  I will record the bone loss data on a pocket chart.  It allows us to celebrate when areas get better!  Scaling under the gum will disturb the dangerous plaque.  It will create an area that the gum will re-attach to, and hold the tooth in place.  Sometimes this is done in conjunction with a local anaesthetic, a water scaler and it finishes with the tooth being flushed out with an anti-inflammatory rinse.

Air Polish – £80

Think of it like a jet wash for the teeth.  Air polishing is a minimally invasive technique that uses a mixture of compressed air, water and fine powder to remove unsightly staining and harmful plaque from the teeth.

Plans (all costs per person unless stated otherwise)

I am committed to ensuring my services are as accessible as possible, so I have a sliding scale of pricing depending on your income or circumstances, to reflect our social values. Flying Smiles offers a thorough, detailed appointment with the convenience at being carried out at home.

The three pricing tiers are explained here:

For those who wish to generously offset the price for those who may be struggling financially.

You will receive the same service and attention as a regular patient but your extra gratuity payment will support those who are unable to comfortably afford the services we provide.

For every community supporter that signs up this provides an allocation for a customer on the economical rate.

Please let Fiona know if you want to sign up for this.

The regular price of the treatment.

This is what I will charge unless you state otherwise. This includes any photos, any interdental aids that are used and left for your use, application of one surface fluoride and use of topical anaesthetic.

See the price list below for treatments such as temporary fillings and fissure sealants.

An economical package for those who want to be subsidised by community supporters.

To ensure that this tier option is allocated fairly, Fiona will discuss it with you in more depth if you feel that this is the right choice for you.

Remember, we also packages available for different budgets and households. More information on those is mentioned below.
