STERILISATION PROCESS

The following video will give you information on the sterilisation measures in place. These comply with dental industry regulations and guidance, to keep you safe!

The General Dental Council (GDC) and Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) have created procedures to keep you and the dental industry safe and healthy!

I have a room that is dedicated to preventing cross-contamination.

Risk-assessments of customers’ homes allows me to work at the same level as I would in a purpose-built clinic. The HIS guidelines govern the process of decontamination. This includes the work environment, the instruments and myself.

The use of six monthly audits will allow Flying Smiles to monitor and develop for the future.

Continuing the safety process in the home

In a dental practice, decontamination has been carried out beforehand. During a home visit it will be done in front of you.

Before the visit I will (risk) assess the venue. By speaking on the phone or in person Flying Smiles will check: where the treatment will take place, access to the property, mobile phone access, who is present (human and animal) and location of the hand wash sink.

Flying smiles has a procedure for transporting the sterile equipment as well as how to set up for the appointment.

On arrival, (after a ‘hello’ and during ‘how are you’ and general chit-chat), shoes will be changed and a clear apron put on. With washed hands, the ‘clean’ box of instruments will be laid out on a safe surface.
Information gathered: via medical, social and dental history notes. With gloved hands, a check of the mouth’s soft tissues (oral cancer check) and hard tissues (dental charting) will be done.
Flying Smiles will then talk through what they have found and discuss which treatment options and costs. Together we will agree what treatment you would like.
Treatment will be carried out and extensive home-care instructions given. Working together, Flying Smiles will help you change habits which will optimise the health of your mouth.
While you rinse and admire your smile, Flying Smiles will place all ‘dirty’ instruments and rubbish in a box marked ‘dirty’. This ‘dirty’ box will be transported back to the sterilising room where the HIS/GDC decontamination process will be followed.
